Pip's meanderings

I've been a member of this site for a little while, was promoted to mod status and then was enticed to go to Admin. IIRC ct said "do you want to be god on this site" and I said N0 WAY JOSE!. (OK that may not be true)
Since then I've noticed that ct and Fogdude have their own threads (shows how good an Admin I am(but I could delete them ;) )

So this one is mine.

Do not expect any sense to be posted in here - if that's what you want go back to the main forum - you have been warned.

Some new members here may find it strange that my avatar is that of a woman. Those that know me just put up with it!

I'm a Lexa nutcase!

WHY? You'll have to wait until the next installment, I have to go and do a little work (little being the operative word!).

I did warn you though! "Don't expect anything sensible here!"
:LOL :LOL :LOL :LOL :LOL

You lot thought I'd forgotten about this but you were wrong! :Evil

As retgards Lexa, you'll have to wait but I will tell you eventually -ish! =O

So, I've got a project this weekend that has nothing to do with covers. It's all about a video card. I know BORING!!!!

It's not a card I need just one that's pi**ing me off. I don't like things not working how I want.

So, first the card.

It was and I suppose the first "big beast" as not many PC cases could house it. Outdated now but that's by the by. Radeon 5970. I think the first card to utilise 2 GPU's but the same cooling setup as a single one. REDICULOUS!

BTW Lexa is still my babe but I'll get back to her another time. :love :love

As Foggy knows I do run high intensive GPU progs but the 5970 overheats and bugs out within 5 mins. At present I have an R9 280X and a HD5870 running at 94% and can still post here without problem.

So what's the answer? Well I've got all the components for a watercooled solution. That's my weekend project If it works as expected my 5970 will outperform the 2 cards I'm using at present (with a bit of overclockig). :D

Here's the benchmark with the 2 cards.

Watch this space I'll update it over the weekend with pics of the build.

Then watch that big boy go!

BTW did I tell you Lexa's my babe? =O

You were right from your first post on this thread, we should "not expect any sense to be posted in here"... :LOL

Before you ask there is one component that hasn't turned up yet so the project is on hold.

It should've been here Saturday.

Can't continue without it!

Such is life...

The missing piece has now arrived!

I've already done a little bit of prep. I have 2 flow meters purely because they house the temp sensors so I will know when the radiator needs cleaning.

One will monitor the temp of the water going into the Radiator, the other of the temp exiting. When it rises too much (depends on ambiant temps) I'll know the rad needs cleaning.

I've cut out one of the mesh blanking plate on the front to house the LED readouts.

Sorry about the image quality but I'm using an old back-up phone as my other is in for repair and the camera on it is crap!

Off to work soon so rest will have to wait until tomorrow.

It will be tomorrow.

I've stripped down the graphics card and have most of the pipework cut to size. All I have to do now is final assembly, charge the system with water and test outside the PC to make sure there's no leaks.

I'll be posting a pics of the assembly tomorrow. ;)

I had my attention diverted today as it's F1 Grand Prix weekend so watched final practice and qualifying. :LOL :LOL :LOL

Don't you just love it when things are going great and then all of a sudden there's a spanner thrown into the works.

Once I'd watched the Grand Prix today I made myself something to eat and then had a little rest so I'd be refreshed and ready to get this done. :cheesy

So, using 8mm ID hose I connect the pump outlet to the first flow meter/temp sensor then to a "Y" joint so that each GPU gets it's own supply of water at the same temp. I knew that the waterblock hose connectors (pagodas) were 10mm ID and had obtained from a friend about 2ft of 10mm hosing to accomodate this. All going good so far.

From the waterblocks back to another "Y" joint and from there with 8mm hose via the second flow meter/temp sensor to the radiator.

OH BUGGER! The exact same flow meter from the same supplier has 10mm pagodas, the 8mm hose won't fit even though I've tried softening it with boiling water! :-( :-( :-(

Back on the phone to my friend (he's an overclocker) " Have you any more 10mm hose?"

"Probably why?"

So, after explaining to him the upshot is he'll either find some more 10mm hose or 2 8mm pagodas tomorrow. Once either arrive about 10mins to complete and route the circuit, 15 mins to charge and bleed the system, 15 mins to test for leaks before install. Nothing ever goes smoothly for me.
