Old biker or new...?

Postby Fejinwales » Mon Mar 21, 2011 8:35 am

Anyone out there an old biker, like me (though I don't ride any more)? Who rode back in the days when there were no speed cameras, speed guns or average speed cameras? When there was only about a quarter of the traffic on the roads, when every day seemed sunny and bright and bikers went for 'burns' in large groups on weekends and never obeyed the speed limits? When the police stopped us every opportunity they got just to try to find a fault and when it was fun?

If so what bike did you have back then? and if you are a so-called 'Born again' biker what do you have now? Are you a biker in any case? If so what bike do you ride?

My four were as follows:

Old 'R' reg Honda CG 125 (learnt to ride on)
Yamaha RD400DX (two stroke acceleration machine)
Suzuki GT 1000S (got knocked off it and spend 2 years in hospital)
Honda VF 400-4 (to get back on the horse and before I got a car)

Dream bikes I never got to own:

Suzuki GT250 ram Air model
Suzuki GT 750 Triple (water cooled)
Kawasaki Z900

I not a biker, although i do like some of the American bikes. Mostly seem to see the portable hairdryers when i'm out and about, doesnt really inspire interest, or i see them stupid things that only do 30mph always getting in my way, god i hate them. On the rare occasion i do see a nice bike it is very refreshing and good to see, but as for riding one myself, lets just say i dont think i'm the biker type lol.

Ohhh, I loved them and lived for them. Bought my first one within a year of leaving school from wages from my first job which I started within a week of leaving school. Believe it or not it cost just £218 on the road, delivered and with a full tank of petrol. Brand new Honda CG125. Turned out to be a non-reliable piece of crap that wouldn't start and had to have new points constantly. Learnt to ride on it and passed my test on it though which led to bigger and better things culminating in an idiot in a white MKIV Cortina hitting me square on while pulling out of a hotel. Almost killed me, landed me in hospital for over 2 years with 28 operations - skin grafts, vein transplants, experimental surgery. Long story short - had one more bike after that (to get back on the horse), then packed them in.

I still get the lovely feeling when I hear them belting up the mountain road by my house, or when I see them on the road on a sunny day. And I never regret a moment of my time as an active biker.
