15. Ryugyong Hotel, Pyongyang, North Korea

Perhaps a shining example of North Korea’s maniacal thirst for grandiosity, this imposing hotel was coated in a cool $150 million worth of glass in 2008, but has largely been abandoned for the past 16 years.

I lived in Utah during my teens & 20s. Kennecott was a constant item of news. You heard about stuff being done there all the time. It is huge. The trucks look like toys until you see them close up. I was always struck by how relatively little their loads looked, & how small & shallow their beds were, compared to their size, but it take a massive vehicle to move that many tons of ore in one load.

This is the former headquarters of Bulgaria’s Communist Party: a flying saucer type building that went into disrepair after the fall of the Iron Curtain.

17. Abandoned submarine base in Balaklava, Ukraine

At the height of the communism, this old submarine dock was one of the most secretive places in the Soviet Union. Still partly active s a national naval museum, it was decommissioned in 1993.

Six Flags Jazzland has been abandoned since it was severely damaged during Hurricane Katrina.

Operating as a wheat mill until it was abandoned in 1866, this mill in situated the Valley of the Mills in Sorrento, Italy.
