What is Hugh Jackman going to do once he's finished playing Wolverine? Well, if all goes well, he may step into the role of another heroic franchise — although one that takes place long before Logan would have walked the Earth.
The Wrap reports that Jackman is in early talks to star as the ancient Greek mythological hero Odysseus in Lionsgate's The Odyssey, which is based on Homer's epic poem. For those who aren't familiar with the story, it follows a soldier who spends ten long years desperately trying to return to his wife and son after fighting in the Trojan War. But the sea god Poseidon cursed his voyage, sending him on detour after detour that he must overcome in order to finally make it home. Odysseus is one of the most persistent characters in all of literature.
Sean Bean portrayed the character in 2004's Troy, which told the story of The Illiad and chronicled the events of the Trojan War. I remember watching a 1997 made-for-TV version of The Odyssey in grade school Armand Assante in the lead role, and despite how cheesy it was, it made me want to study ancient cultures, so I went on to get a minor in classical studies (essentially the study of Greek and Roman civilizations) in college. The Odyssey is an important story for me, and Jackman has the gravitas, physicality, and smoldering determination to make a fantastic Odysseus.
Francis Lawrence is set to direct, Peter Craig will write the script, and Nina Jacobson is producing, marking a reunion with the studio and filmmaking team behind The Hunger Games sequels. The studio wants to turn this into a franchise, and they may end up doing a loose remake of Troy by eventually adapting The Iliad as a prequel to The Odyssey. Let's just hope they don't end up splitting the movies into two parts like they love doing, because that never seems to work out well.
