Brexit

Thoughts on Great Britain leaving the EUChat area for all to enjoy a bit of friendly banter, share gossip or other chit-chat.

Brexit

Postby Fogdude » Thu Jun 23, 2016 5:25 pm

Being a native born Texan, I've long had a romantic affection for the idea of Texas seceding from the Union & becoming an independent nation of its own. Most Texans are fiercely independent & most feel the same way, but due to the immigration of so may Californians, fleeing their oppressive state government with ever increasing taxes & regulation, & Michiganders, fleeing their failed economy due to the loss of the manufacturing industry, our population has become quite diluted with Liberal minded folks who flee the damage they've caused in their home states, to a state that doesn't suffer those ills, only to immediately begin supporting precisely the same policies that ruined their state of origin.

It seems Great Britain may be suffering the same plight. I don't know much at all about the internal issues of GB. I only known what I see & hear on TV & the Internet, most of which is skewed one way or the other & hardly unbiased. So, I'm not sure what to think of Brexit, though, deep down, I favor any people who love independence & have a desire to 'make it on their own' & run their lives themselves.

There has been an active secession drive ongoing in Texas for years, called The Texas Nationalist Movement (TNM). I'm a contributor, though of late, I've become a bit disillusioned by comments coming from the upper echelons on their vision of a free Texas. They're starting to sound a bit Utopian & I fear they've been bitten by the bug to trend away from what made the United States the most successful nation in the history of the world, until recently, that is.

I know there are a lot of Brits here. What are your thoughts, if you dare to share them, that is. ;-)

One thing I have no problem with is sharing my thoughts with you Foggy. :)

Brexit or Remain will be decided in about 3 hrs from now although the result won't be announced until all the counts are finished 8-10hrs hence.

Whatever the result I expect it to be close, personally I'm all for Brexit. I voted back in 1975 to come out of the (then) EEC which was just a trading block and nothing else as I had an idea of what would follow. Since then it has been slowly and surely been creeping towards a "United States of Europe" slowly and surely eroding the sovereignty of the member countries and expanding to take in the countries in the east of Europe. All you have to look at is the Ukraine to see what could/may happen in the future. Russia will not stand further expansion of the EU and N.A.T.O. towards it's border.

Looking inwards to just Britain, due to the free movement agreement we have murderers, rapists etc from other member countries here who this UK government cannot get rid of because the European Court of Justice overrules our own Supreme Court.

I hope Brexit will win but if they don't I hope public opinion would put this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transatlantic_Trade_and_Investment_Partnership dead in the water.

Thanks, Pip. I suspected as much & appreciate your candor. It's a sticky one, but I agree. Staying won't likely end well. The whole open borders thing is what is driving the TNM, along with runaway Political Correctness. Seeing that it's happening on a worldwide basis is making me lean toward the idea that it really is space aliens who run our governments & are driving us all toward self-immolation. I hope Brexit wins, for all your sakes, as well as ours, but I read an article that showed: when an issue is evenly split, the undecided votes that come in at the last minute almost always go with the status quo, rather than risk change. One would hope that the undecideds would have the wits to understand that the status quo really IS the change & that Brexit would be a RETURN to normalcy, not a leap into unknown change. But, I doubt most undecideds have that many wits among them, combined. I hope I'm wrong. We will certainly see in a few hours.

How right you are Foggy. I worry about how the younger generation will vote. You may not have seen it over there but they seem more concerned about cell phone roaming charges and cheap holidays rather then the important parts of what we are voting for.

Results should start coming in about 5 hrs from now but I'll update this thread along the way and give you the final result when we have it.

I'll post the updates as you are interested. There are also postal votes to be added in the morning. Sunderland, the north west and the rest of the north east may push it the other way. There's only 3 of 382 declared results so early days.

They've now stopped reporting individual results but...

Remain 259,790

Leave 266,721

So leave in the lead again.

Whatever the result this will open up the North/South divide and the Scots can do what they want..

Shetland Isles & Dunbartonshire vote remain. Again expected from Scotland.

Total so far

Leave 321,339

This is only a small fraction of the votes to come in.

BTW only 12 of 382 that have returned the votes so far. Early days (or night for me!).

The polls are looking wrong so far but results from the South have to come in yet.

16.4 million is when it can be called so realise we are still talking peanuts with the vote so far BUT the results in so far show the trend.
