Looks like this forum is pretty dead . . . let liven it up!
Has anyone had a problem installing/running the Windows 7 upgrade advisor? I tried installing it numerous times from Firefox and then IE8 without success. There was no error message, no nothin', the screen just sat there waiting for the screensaver to kick in. Through numerous internet searches I found out that if you have an ampersand (&) in your current, existing windows log-in ID then the utility will not install and there's no message saying why.
My log in ID is B&D and my daughter's in T&S. This caused me considerable heartache till I figured out the solution. You can download the utility Windows7UpgradeAdvisor.exe to your hard drive then use Winrar on it to extract the files, then run runfirst.cmd to install it. It should install then.
One of the tests it performs is to see if your video card meets the requirements of Windows Aero. The test is flawed and may tell you your card won't support it when really it will. Check MS's web site for video card requirements if this happens to you.
