In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as:
"I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 Ford XR3i" rather than
"I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".
Sad Lexa Doig Fan and PROUD of it!

I don't know about US produced Ford engines but the european produced ones were good, especially from Germany. The bodywork was a different thing though. It would rot before the engine gave up!

I had an old Saab 95 estate with a UK Ford V34 1,5 ltr engine and had a hose burst on me (Saab ad a deal where they supplied the steering racks for Ford and Ford supplied engines for Saab. as I was on the motoway (Interstate) and there were no services to call into for a replacement it got me home, huffing an puffin alaong the way. I kknew the enginge was fu%%ed but it got me home.

Following morning got in touch with my mechanic (at thhe time), he collected it, replaced the engine with a Ford Taurus 2ltr of German origin.

It was the best workhorse I ever had!
