Me too Vince, not because I think it will be great but because I suspect it will be fun to watch, you can generally count on Abrams for that if nothing else.

:cheesy

I just realized I haven't ranted about anything for a little while now so... :LOL

<rant>

I'm sure the Star Wars 'purists" will find plenty to complain about though, now let me say I'm a fan of the originals having seen them all at release and I too don't favor the last three as much but still find them watchable. All that said I'll be watching this new one hopefully with an unbiased mind, that's the goal anyway.

Many others will not, funny thing is they love the originals not because they are the greatest films ever made but because it's cool to do so, seriously think about it, if Star Wars had never made it to the screen in '77 and therefore there was no trilogy or follow up films and then it were released new today, I wonder would it 'be' the blockbuster at the box office today on the same scale of it's seemingly untouchable cult status which it enjoys today.

I seriously doubt it myself, I mean even with new effects and all that it would still not be the "cutting edge" sci-fi film it was then, that stuff is everyday fare now and it would be rare for a new sci-fi film to ever develop that kind of following again in my humble opinion.

So one has to wonder what it is exactly the huge Star Wars fan base really expects to see?

I doubt that could ever be quantified into a valid list though because if you asked a million SW fans you would likely get a million different answers lol.

The whole thing just sails right over me why they care so much, I get the nostalgia of it, I was there, so I get that, I like it too but is it the holy grail of all sci-fi films, far from it I think--now there are many drums one could beat right here to make that point but Avatar really puts a dagger in that one for me it's a far better made film, great story, and it's success will likely rule the world of money for a long time to come, just saying...

So like I said without the push of being 'first', I just can't see it rising up the ranks of the huge list of box office successes out there today--not with the fire by which it was able to muster it's cult following all those many years ago...

Or to make it even more fun imagine Phantom Menace came out first, this July...

Mmm... my money would be on it being the last Star Wars film ever made if that were the case.

</rant>

I wasn't there in the 70s for the first 3. I had watched them before the new trilogy came out but it had been some time. I was pretty excited when I heard they were going to make new movies. I waited till they were all out on DVD and had me a marathon. I must say that the new films while watchable relied to heavily on the gimics of cgi. The old movies had more heart and soul to them. I prefer the older films for that reason. I also really like the Clone Wars series. That was one of the best animated series that has been made of recent. My concern for these new movies as they are made is that the focus will not be on the characters and the relationships but instead on just trying to make big explosions for no real reason. I've got me fingers crossed though. Disney has come through before I hope they do on this.

Clone Wars was great, I have all those too, as you know I'm not a huge fan of animation but it has it's moments and that was one of them ;)

I agree Easy, it's hard to set a new bar now days, everything has been done, an in many cases done to death.

I'm not sure what a film would have to do to create that kind of cultural ripple today.

:)

I remember going to the Parc and Dare pictures (cinema) in 1977 to see a film called Star Wars, those were the days when it was cheap and the film was on twice with a 'short' in between where once you paid you stayed if you wanted.

I went in for the first playing and once I saw the opening credits and the battle cruiser I was hooked, even more so when I saw Carrie Fisher.... I watched it, was completely transfixed and I stayed there to watch it again after the short. I went to see this film 13 times, I know as I have checked in my diary and have been a Star Wars Fan ever since.

I hated return of the Jedi. Actually, more specifically I detested those idiotic furry forest dwellers on Endor but I still love watching the film.

When the three prequels came out I watched them too and I seem to be in a minority here as I love them (apart from JaJa ), I watch them and never get bored. I hate the mistake later referenced in the original where Obi-Wan declares that he 'cannot remember ever having owned a droid', but I feel that the films complete the set. (I'm sure there are others but this one for me is glaring even though technically he never owned R2D2 he would have surely remembered it). I realise it was a hard one to get right but I don't like it.

On to this new film then. I think they should have left well alone and I for one will not be watching it, I haven't even watched the trailers. I like the joke that it should have been called 'Return of the geriatrics'. I like the Star Wars as I know them, If Disney has anything to do with it they'll add a character even worse than Ja Ja Binx and will people die? To me nothing matters as I am not interested in it - here I am certain I am in a minority.

Bet you watch it if it gets rave reviews Jeff. Perhaps not in the theatre but on DVD or stream it.

If you are a Star Wars fan you won't be able to resist if only to slate it off!
