bpmford - Introduction

Postby bpmford » Tue Dec 21, 2010 10:10 pm

Hello to the members here at Uncovered!

Now, I recognize some names here, and for those of you who already know me, Hello!

And if you already know me, you know I love long intros!

For those who don't know me, I figured I'd give you an idea of who I am and the custom covers I've created...

My name is Brad, and I am a (currently unemployed, arg) Graphic Designer and I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada! I got into custom covers because of a grief I had living in Canada. You see, here, when we get movies, we don't just get them with covers in English, but in FRENCH as well... that wouldn't be a problem for me if they didn't feel the need to duplicate every Title Treatment on the front and spine in both languages, and riddle the back with so much text, it might as well be a novel!

So, I went looking for some scanned US versions to replace the crap bilingual ones I had... That's when I found out about this whole custom cover world. My first taste of custom covers was only a thread devoted to it at blu-ray.com, but I soon learned that there were whole sites dedicated to it and have been on a bunch ever since!

It wan't until after a few months on a site, that I decided to try my own design... Let's say design(S)...

As I had previously decided to start collecting all of the Academy Award Best Picture Winning Films, I also wanted to make a set of covers to go with them... So, out came my first covers (made using Adobe Illustrator... This is the DVDs all together, and a couple of the Blu-ray ones:

I also came up with a simple set of covers for all my Blu-rays (I only collect blu's), so I could have all my movies in a nice collection; these are my Blu-Series covers:

* I have not only done Blu-Series covers for a ton of individual movies, but also for whole sets like all of the Saw movies or two covers for all 8 Harry potters. I have also done TV ones, series, and even PS3 games. In total, I have made over 460 Blu-Series covers, many of them as requests from others.

After that I decided to try out some other titles, and came up with these two (both also done with Illustrator) ( I hadn't learned Photoshop yet!):

From there I decided it was time to get using the right program, and to this date I have made over 60 different designs... I won't riddle this thread with all of them, but will show you some of my favorite work. Included in the pile is Final Fantasy, my first ever cover using Photoshop, and Shutter Island, one I am currently working on!

I have also made a few totally unique covers that I don't think anyone else has done, called my Cut-Out covers. These are the ones I did for the Batman Movies and Pandorum:

Lastly... You must know that I am a total OCD, as you can see... my entire movie collection is in custom covers (minus a few Special Edition Packages), and not just my own!

Well, that's all folks, that's me!

Hope to get to know the members here and share my designs with this community!

Later! :D

Wow!! I don't think I have ever read a better intro. I love the uniqueness of many of your designs and I hope you can share some of them here. I have not seen your cutouts before but what a fantastic idea. I've got your account all set up so have a look around. If you have any questions just let me know. Hope to see you about. :) :)

Awesome,

Welcome fellow Kanuck, I am a true Canuck as I'm from BC :P

I am more proficient in Photoshop, but I do use AI for most of my vector logos and title treatments.

I'm curious if you are just sourcing images and placing them in your canvas or are you colour correcting, blending and all with AI. I find AI has it's place but Photoshop has way more tools to manipulate the image. Thus PS sorta has vector capability with the shapes and pen tools, just harder to zoom in when you see pixels unlike AI but still fairly the same.

Happy learning,

Thanks vince for the set-up and for the comments!

altre, hello fellow Canadian! The only two covers I've done using AI were the Kill Bill and Repo ones... and even those required me to re-do in Ps to get to look right and do specific elements in PS. I agree AI has it's place, and I have used it lots, but just like you, for vectoring and TTs.

When I first started in AI, I knew fragments of PS, so I used to alter the image if needed in PS, then import it into AI.

Thanks guys!
